↳ GRAMMAR ESSENTIALS

In each edition of our newsletter, we break down complex grammar rules to help you master English one step at a time. This week, let's focus on the Present Perfect Tense, a key element RM employs in his speech.

What is the Present Perfect Tense?

The Present Perfect Tense is used to express actions that started in the past and continue into the present, or actions completed at an unspecified time in the past. This tense is formed using "have/has" + "past participle".

Let's delve into both uses, with examples from RM's speech:

  1. Unfinished Actions: We use this tense to talk about experiences or changes that have happened at some unspecified time in the past. The action or situation started in the past and is still happening now. For example, when RM says, "I have learned to love myself," it means he started learning this in the past and continues to do so now.

  2. Completed Actions: We also use the present perfect to discuss completed actions in an undefined past. For example, RM could say, "We have visited many countries as BTS," indicating that this action happened but doesn't specify when.

How to Form the Present Perfect Tense?

To create the present perfect tense, we use "have" or "has" depending on the subject (I, you, we, they = have; he, she, it = has), followed by the past participle of the verb. For example, "I have walked," "She has finished," "We have eaten."

Common Mistakes:

Avoid using specific time references, such as yesterday, last week, or a year ago with the present perfect tense. For actions completed at a specific time in the past, we use the simple past tense.

Present perfect tense might seem a bit daunting, but with practice, it becomes easier. Try creating your own sentences using the present perfect tense and share them with us!

Remember, grammar is the backbone of language proficiency, and understanding it is key to becoming fluent in English. Keep practicing, and you'll surely master it!
